The government resorted to revise the maximum retail price of rice as the millers had pointed out that they were unable to supply rice at the MRP prices gazetted in 2022 owing to the increased cost of production.

The move came following talks held between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and leading paddy millers, last week on the rice shortage in the market. At this meeting, the millers demanded an upward revision of the controlled price.

President Dissanayake had instructed Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) officials to closely monitor the situation over the next 10 days and strictly enforce the law against rice mill owners if they failed to comply with the fixed prices.
