The ‘Easter Attack April 2019 – Victim Fund has received a total sum of Rs.231. 8 million as of August 21, 2024 , of which Rs.100 million was paid as compensation by former President Maithripala Sirisena as directed by the Supreme Court, the Office for Reparations said.
The victim’s fund was established with effect from January 19, 2023 at Bank of Ceylon (BOC) by the Office for Reparations in compliance with the Orders made by the Supreme Court in its judgment dated 12 January 2023 in a number of Fundamental Rights cases filed by victims and their families of the Easter Sunday terror attacks.
The former president and several senior police and public officials were named as respondents in the case.
The Rs.100 million payments by Mr. Sirisena are the total amount he was ordered to pay by the SC which was paid in installments with the final payment made on August 12, 2024.
Former IGP Pujith Jayasundara and Nilantha Jayawardena were each ordered to pay Rs. 75 million so far, each has paid RS.60.8 million and Rs. 10 million respectively.
Former Secretary to the President Hemasiri Fernando who was ordered to pay Rs. 50 million has paid the full amount while Sisira Mendis was ordered to pay Rs. 10 million has also paid the full amount.
The state had made a payment of Rs. 1 million to the Fund.
