Rains and strong winds would persist until Tuesday, while a depression would furthr develop into a cyclonic condition by Monday, the Meteorology Department said.
The Director Forecasting of the Department, Meril Mendis told the Times online Though the weather situation is expected to improve after Tuesday, rainfall and strong winds could be expected on Sunday and Monday therefore another depression condition, Therefore floods and earth slips could take place as a result of continued downpour .
Mr Mendis elaborated that since ground was prolong exposed to rainfall landslides could occur, while the ground water levels increase could gradually lead to floods.
The Meteorology Department requested naval and fishing communities, engaging activities over the shallow sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via the Hambantota area to be vigilant.
Meanwhile the Director General of the Disaster Management Retd Major General, Sampath Kotuwagoda told the Sunday Times that since the meteorology department had forecasted continuation of rains and strong winds during upcoming days, they request people to be vigilant.
He warned the people weather conditions could change even though the weather forecast says that the weather situation could improve after Tuesday, people still should be vigilant of their surroundings and take initial steps to ensure their own safety.
Mr Kotuwagoda added that they also request people to inform them of the disaster situation to hotline 117 so they could coordinate rescue and response teams.
According to the disaster Management center’s island wide total incident summary from October 18 to 28 issued at 4.00 pm Saturday 18 districts recorded disaster situations. Accordingly 28,670 persons of 7,202
