Three Fundamental Rights (FR) applications filed challenging the current Emergency Regulations were granted leave to proceed by the Supreme Court.
The petitioners were Namini Panditha and Rusiru Egodage, the Conveners of the Liberal Youth Movement and Counsel Dr. Gehan Gunathilake appeared for the petitioners.
He contended that several provisions of the Emergency Regulations violated human rights, including the right to equality, the freedom of speech and expression, the freedom of peaceful assembly, and the right to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
The Court further directed the state to report back to it after assessing any elements of the Emergency Regulations that were deemed to be too broad.
