The COPE meeting was told that a 43-acre plot of land in the Hanthana estate was released to Ms Kiriella in a manner that bypassed the provisions of the Land Reforms Act.
The meeting was attended by officials from the Land Reforms Commission (LRC) where the LRC Director General Padmasiri Liyanage stated that the Commission was under no legal obligation to release any land to Kiriella.
Officials claimed that the land, located in Hanthanawatta and belonging to the Janatha Estate Development Board, was released to her outside the provisions of the Land Reform Act.
The Director General of the Land Reform Commission, addressing the committee, stated that the land was originally allocated to her by the Janatha Estate Development Board and that the Land Reform Commission had no obligation to provide her with land.
It is up to the COPE now to prove it.
