The Central Bank has issued gold and silver commemorative coins of Rs. 1,000, each with the same depiction, to mark the 65th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sri Lanka and the People's Republic of China and the 100th Anniversary of Communist Party of China.
This is the first time Sri Lanka is issuing commemorative coins to celebrate the anniversary of an overseas political party and this fact was reported exclusively in the Sunday Times two weeks ago.
The Central Bank statement on Tuesday said the coins have been issued at the request of the Government of Sri Lanka as an accolade for long-standing friendship and mutual trust between the two countries. The first coin was officially presented to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa by Prof. W D. Lakshman, Bank Governor at the Presidential Secretariat on Tuesday. The front view of the coin shows the Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre with national flags of Sri Lanka and China while the reverse of the coin has the words “Communist Party of China” in Sinhala, Tamil and English and the years’ 1921-2021.ppears at the middle of the coin.

500 pieces of the 22k gold coin have been minted and will sold at a collectors price of Rs. 222,000 each while the 2000 pieces of the silver coin have been minted and to be sold at Rs 17,000 each.
