The Sectoral Oversight Committee on International Relations in Parliament has urged Foreign Affairs Ministry officials to immediately look into the possibility of setting up a Sri Lanka Embassy in Romania.
The Committee headed by MP Namal Rajapaksa when met recently, has highlighted the need of an Embassy in Romania as there is a considerable percent of Sri Lankan population and no Embassy to look into their grievances.
The Committee has questioned the representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the challenges pertaining to the establishment of a mission in Romania, Parliament media said.
The officials present have stated that Cabinet approval has been obtained to establish a Mission in Romania and the cadre has already been approved and the establishment of an Embassy is on course. The Committee has instructed the officials present to take action on the matter without further delay.
Minister of Labour and Foreign Employment Manusha Nanayakkara said Romania had opened 100,000 foreign jobs in the fields of construction. Romania attracts both workers and students.
The Romanian government, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs annually offers bachelor's degree, master's degree and PhD. scholarships for students from non-European Union countries.
Both the countries continue to maintain strong trade ties as well. Romania also provided emergency humanitarian aid to Sri Lanka worth 32,000 EUR following the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami.
