The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has created a new position in the party as Deputy National Organizer.
This was when its new office bearers were appointed on Saturday (16).
However, they left out filling the post of national organizer after Basil Rajapaksa opted to step down from the post.
There was speculation that he may be reappointed to the post later while bringing in Namal Rajapaksa as his deputy.
The party’s executive committee that met at the official residence of leader Mahinda Rajapaksa took these decisions on new office bearers.
MP Sagara Kariyawasam was appointed General Secretary once again. Besides, Minister Pavitra Wanniarachchi was appointed as the new Treasurer of the party.
Ven. Uthurawala Dammaratana Thera was reappointed as the Chairman of the party.
Meanwhile, the SLPP also appointed members to its politburo.
The party is expected to pick a Tamil and Muslim to these posts later.
The new appointments came a day after the second convention of the party was held and where the former president Mahinda Rajapaksa expressed confidence of winning the next elections.
Party sources said they were planning to face elections under their party symbol instead of supporting another major party.
