Sajith Premadasa, the Presidential Candidate for Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and Leader of the Opposition, has announced plans to transform Sri Lanka's deep sea and freshwater fishing industries into ‘smart industries’ under his administration.
Speaking at a rally in Puttalam, he outlined his vision to establish a public-private joint venture within the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Mr. Premadasa emphasized his commitment to modernizing the fishing sector with advanced technology and innovative methods.
He highlighted that the EEZ, which extends 200 nautical miles from the coast and was secured in the 1980s, will be harnessed for sustainable development through collaborative projects and foreign investment.
Additionally, Mr. Premadasa aims to boost agriculture by enhancing paddy cultivation, improving crop production, and fostering the development of ‘smart farmers’ and ‘smart fishermen.’
