School lunch programme to be expanded in 2024: Minister of Edu

The Government has decided to further extend the present-day school meals programme in 2024 in an effort to provide lunch to 1.6 million students in Primary Schools all over Sri Lanka, the Minister of Education Dr. Susil Premajayantha said whilst addressing the Global Summit of the ‘School Meal Programme’ held on October 18 and 19.

In addition, Minister Premajayantha mentioned that arrangements are in progress to get underway of providing free school meals covering all of the 4.1 million schoolchildren in the country by 2030.

The budget appropriation for this very purpose will be extended to USD 204 million.

In view of this, a decision has been reached to launch a fund apportioned to ensuring the nutrition of school students.

Adding that, Minister Premajayantha further said the pertinent Gazette is in the midst of being drafted by the Legal Draftsman.

Fuel prices revised

The price of Lanka Petrol 92 Octane has been reduced by Rs. 5, while the price of Lanka Super Diesel Star Euro 4 has been increased by Rs. 5, from midnight today, October 31, 2025, according to the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation.
