News

The second phase of the "Senahase Athwela" (Hand of Affection) programme, initiated by the Matara Journalists' Organisation to support provincial journalists affected by the recent cyclone disaster, has been successfully concluded, its Secretary Yasantha Ariyasena said.

By the time the second phase was completed, the "Senahase Athwela" programme had been able to provide support to 33 provincial journalists across 9 districts.

The program, named "Senahase Athwela," involved listing affected electronic and print media provincial journalists at the district level who had lost or sustained damage to their homes due to landslides and falling trees, or who were victims of floods. The programme facilitated the distribution of aid.

The first phase of the programme provided aid to journalists in the Kegalle, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Polonnaruwa, Matale, Gampaha, and Colombo districts on the 5th and 6th of this month. The second phase, which involved the distribution of dry rations, sanitary items, and other goods, took place on the 9th for affected journalists in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura districts.

Several individuals and organisations supported to make the programme a success. They included Matara District MP Chathura Galappaththi and the Justin Galappaththi Foundation, Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Member Ajmal Sattar, Pradeshiya Sabha Member Rasika Priyankara, former Pradeshiya Sabha Member Vindika Ipalawatta, Mr. Lalith Prabodh (currently residing in Korea), and ayurvedic physician Buddhika Senewiratne. Mr. Kevin S. Leon of MexQuick Trading Platform and SL Bull Trading Community, provided special sponsorship.
