Mahinda Kodithuwakku who was alleged to have made distorted statements about Buddhism posing as ‘Awalokitheshwara’ has been remanded till January 24.
The self-proclaimed ‘Awalokitheshwara’ was arrested in Pannipitiya yesterday by the Police Computer Crimes Division, Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said.
The suspect, who recently arrived in the country from Egypt, claimed to be the "Awalokitheshwara Bodhisattva" and caused uproar after several controversial videos of his "sermons" went viral on social media.
Several persons, including Buddhist monks and organisations lodged complaints against the suspect with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), stating that he had insulted Buddhism through his statements.
The Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court also imposed a travel ban against the suspect last Friday.

A Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the No. 72 squadron has crashed into the Madhuru Oya reservoir this morning, Air FOrce Media Spokesman Eranda Geeganage said.
Update: Five of the twelve passengers on board the bell 212 aircraft that crashed into the Maduru Oya today, have succumbed to their injuries, the SLAF said.
