Seven persons, including four COVID infected prison inmates suffered injuries when a prison bus transporting the inmates to Jaffna was involved in a crash with a fuel bowser at Ibbankatuwa in Galewela this morning.
The incident occurred when a prison bus was taking four inmates from the Wariyapola Prison who had tested positive for COVID-19 to the Jaffna Prison.
Those injured in the accident were the four prison inmates, the driver of the prison bus, the driver of the bowser and his assistant.
The injured inmates were sent to the Jaffna Prison Hospital via ambulance for treatment while the others were admitted to the Dambulla Base Hospital, Galewela Police said.
Both vehicles suffered severe damage due to the accident.
Initial investigations have revealed that the accident occurred due to the driver of the bus falling asleep at the wheel, police added.
Meanwhile, unidentified persons have also stolen the bowser's batteries soon after the accident. Galewela Police are investigating.
