A string of detection of firearms held illegally have been detected by the Police, a day after a rewards scheme was offered for information leading to the detection of weapons.
Among the detections was the recovery of a locally manufactured gun in the Polpithigama area on Sunday. A 40 year old suspect was also arrested.
Two more guns were found in the Ambanpola area and a 43 year old suspect was arrested. The suspect will be produced in the Mahawa Magistrate courts today.
A 19 year old boy was arrested for the possession of a gun in the Uhana area of the Ampara district on Sunday and is due to be produced in the Ampara Magistrate courts.
Another 58 year old man was arrested in the Nikaweratiya area on Sunday for illegally possessing a gun. He is due to be produced in the Nikaweratiya Magistrate courts.
On Saturday, Inspector General of Police C.D. Wickremaratne sent out a circular announcing a reward scheme for tip-offs leading to the detection of firearms and hand grenades.
The incentive is valid for policemen as well and will be valid until July 31.
