Sri Lankans across the country marked the Sinhala -Tamil New Year with religious and traditional events.
With the dawn of the New Year earlier in the day and other auspicious times large numbers visited the temples and Kovils.
The auspicious time for preparing meals for the New Year was at 3,29 P.M. and commencement of work, transactions and partaking in meals was at 5.05 pm.
Police said that over the 24 hours no serious incidents were reported while policemen have been deployed to maintain security and traffic.

Anointing Oil -April 16 (Sunday) at 9:41 a.m. clad in red and yellow while facing the direction of South.
Leaving for Work -April 17 (Monday) at 6:28 a.m. clad in white-colored clothes while facing the direction of South when leaving the house.
Planting of Tree Saplings - April 20 (Thursday) at 6:38 a.m. clad in golden-colored clothes whilst facing the direction of East.

The Ministry of Environment has taken steps to declare an additional 50 forests as protected reserves, Under the ’Wanaspati’ National Programme.
