A solidarity protest extending support to the ongoing protest by Indian farmers in New Delhi was staged at Malliyappu junction, Hatton yesterday.
Organized by local civil society communities, plantation workers and locals took part in the protest urging Indian government to drop the farming laws which Indian farmers unions opposed on the basis that the legislations were detrimental to the farmers intrests.
The protesters also said as the India's ruling party affiliated corporate Adani group which is to be benefited by the recent laws to take over farming lands in India, similar steps are behind the scene to acquire lands in Sri Lanka too as the group is given 41 percent of share at East Colombo Terminal (ECT) project.
Earlier Indian Farmers Unions have collectively launched protests over the last two months in the capital New Delhi urging the government to drop the laws immediately. The protest turned ugly yesterday with violence as clashes between police and farmers resulted in hundreds of police and protesters injured when they tried to march towards Red Fort to protest as India’s Republic Day celebrations were underway.
