Three special police teams have been deployed to probe the fire that damaged millions worth of water pipes belonging to the Aranayake "Asupini Ella" water project of Hemmathagama water supply scheme a day before its scheduled opening by President Ranil Wickremeisnghe on Saturday, Aranayake Police said.
The special police teams are tasked to identify the root cause of fire or act of sabotage ahead of its scheduled opening by President Ranil Wickremesinghe last Saturday, Chief Police Inspector Rahul Bandara said.
However, President Wickremesinghe declared open the water scheme; the largest water project in the Sabaragamuwa Province last Saturday.
This water scheme was implemented under the financial allocation of Rs. 3,847 million from the Government of Sri Lanka and the loan support of Rs. 18,650 million from the Government of the Netherlands, providing solutions to the drinking water problem in 135 Grama Seva Divisions belonging to Aranayaka, Mawanella and Rambukkana Divisional secretariats in Kegalle district, according to Presidential Secretariat.
