The Election Commission of Sri Lanka Nimal S. Punchewa has expressed shock over the arrest of Myanmar election officials and called for their release.
“We are shocked by the imprisonment of officials of the Election Commission Myanmar including its Head, Mr. U Hla Thein, who took charge of the election process”, he said
“..it is very unfortunate that the officials of the Election Commission of Myanmar who carry out a legitimate duty entrusted upon them by the law have been imprisoned for carrying out the very duty”, the statement said.
He said the Election Commission of Sri Lanka which considers the imprisonment of officials of the Myanmar Election Commission as prejudicial and detrimental to democratic rule and urges the relevant authorities to release them immediately, he said.
