An icon of Sri Lankan radio and television and veteran journalist with a long standing career spanning 42 years, Sumana Nellampitiya has passed away today morning at the age of 80.
She officially joined the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) in 1967 as a relief announcer. Over the years, she explored various roles, including presenting, scriptwriting, editing, and producing programmes.
A versatile talent, she eventually transitioned to television, making history as the island’s first television news presenter.
