The new rice prices announced by the Rice Millers' Association today cannot be justified, State Minister of Co-operative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection Lasantha Alagiyawanna says.
The state minister made the statement in a media release hours after the association announced new prices for rice after Cabinet decided to revoke the gazette on the maximum retail price for rice.
He claimed the government and the Consumer Affairs Authority will again be forced to step in if certain parties seek to abuse the opportunity given by the government's decision to revoke the gazette.
Mr Alagiyawanna also said the Trade Ministry under Minister Bandula Gunawardana has begun the process of importing 100, 000 metric tonnes of rice in line with yesterday's Cabinet decision and that steps would be taken to release these stocks speedily to the market.
