A request has been submitted by the Railway Station Masters’ Union (SLRSMU) to the President stating to make moves to restructure Sri Lanka Railways (SLR) in place of transforming it to an authority.
“If the SLR is reformed into an entire authority, it would set the stage for an abundance of setbacks,” stressed the SLRSMU General Secretary Kasun Chamara.
“From what we hear, the Ministry’s Secretary has stated that no funds would be allocated from the treasury for the railway employees. Therefore, the remittances will be remunerated on the basis of the profit earned by the SLR,” he further voiced concerns.
Adding that he also said, SLR being a drain on the treasury, there are about 19,382 employees serving the SLR and all the pertinent running costs will have to be covered by the Department’s profit only.
