Stolen motorbike used for chain snatching - Two arrested

News

Two men who allegedly stole a motorbike and then used that motorbike in a chain snatching robbery have been arrested in Agalawatta.

Police Media Unit said the Agalawatta Police had received a tip-off yesterday that a suspicious motorbike was heading towards Agalawatta town and that the pillion rider was carrying a sharp weapon. Acting immediately, officers from the Agalawatta Police had given chase to the motorbike, intercepted it at Agalawatta town and arrested the two suspects.

A search of the suspects revealed a chain in the trouser pocket of the motorbike rider and a sharp weapon in the trouser pocket of the pillion rider, police said.

Further investigations had revealed that the suspects had stolen the motorbike in Matugama and used it to rob a woman of her chain. The suspects had been fleeing the scene at the time of their arrest, police said.

A subsequent check of the chain from a pawn shop had revealed that the chain the suspects had snatched was not a gold chain, police added.

The suspects, aged 28 and 32 years, are residents of Matugama. They are due to be produced before the Matugama Magistrate's Court today.
