Police have arrested the suspect connected to the sexual assault on a female doctor at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital today morning in Galnewa.
The suspect was arrested while hiding in a jungle in Galnewa. He had taken away the phone of the doctor enabling the police to track the suspect.
The suspect arrested was an Army deserter and had committed the crime on the same day he had received bail over case where he was charged for a robbery of gold jewellery.
The 34 year old suspect is being questioned at the Galnewa Police.
Meanwhile services at state-run hospitals across the country remained at a standstill today due to a strike called by the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) in protest over the sexual assault of a female doctor.
Despite the arrest of the suspect, the token strike is due to continue until tomorrow 8.00 a.m.
A spokesman for the GMOA said they decided to continue with the strike to mark their protest about the incident and to call for security of the staff.
As a result of the strike, thousands of patients were turned away from hospitals today.
