The Health Ministry has planned to provide 2000 direct jobs and 5000 indirect jobs by creating the "Suwasiripura Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Zone" at Oyamaduwa, Anuradhapura.
The project is being carried out through Rs 80 billion in local investments.
Twelve investors have already entered into contracts with the government to launch their businesses based on this idea. Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella handed over the certificates of procurement to investors this week.
There is also an opportunity for 11 more investors to invest in the industrial zone.
The government has planned to have 23 pharmaceutical industries to be established there.
The government spends USD 700 million a year importing the nation's essential medications. However, the Health Ministry said it had focused on domestic drug production due to the current economic unrest and international conflicts.
