Tamil-speaking people in North and Eastern provinces today marked Mullivaikaal remembrance day commemorating their war dead despite COVID-19 restrictions imposed in several parts of the regions.
Locals marked the day to remember their loved ones who were killed in the final phases of the war in Mulliathivu in low-key events with limited participation and their respective residences due to the global pandemic.
Tamil political parties and civil society groups earlier asked the people to observe the day in their residences as many parts of the region are partially or completely under lockdown.
Meanwhile, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarians marked the day inside the Parliament. TNA also made arrangements to mark the day at a virtual ceremony this evening.
Three police areas in Mulliathivu including Mullivaikaal where the final phases of war were fought are currently under lockdown after 261 garment workers tested positive at a factory in Puthukkudiyiruppu.
Earlier Mulliathivu Courts granted approval to conduct commemorative events in Mullivaikaal while adhering to COVID-19 regulations. (Pix N.Lohathayalan)
