The government has removed all import taxes on imported milk powder, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella announced today.
He said the decision was taken at the Cabinet meeting yesterday owing to reports of milk powder shortages in the market after the government turned down a request by milk powder importers for a price increase.
Meanwhlle, Cabinet yesterday also decided to vest power to Minister of Finance Basil Rajapaksa to ensure that sufficient stocks of milk powder are supplied to the market by revising the existing tax rates or taking other appropriate measures without increasing the price of milk powder on the local market.
