Tense situation erupted in front of the entrance at University of Jaffna as a war memorial built inside the premises of the University was demolished last night by the university administration under the tight security of police and security authorities.
The memorial built by the Student Union of the university to remember the war dead was destroyed last night by the university administration on the basis that no approvals were given to erect the memorial inside the university.
University students and the public gathered in front of the university last night when authorities locked the university premises, preventing students from disrupting the operation. Throughout the night, students and locals protest in front of the university demanding authorities to stop destroying the memorial.
However, authorities went ahead and destroyed the memorial completely.
Vice Chancellor of the University Prof S. Satkunarajah said that the decision to remove the memorial was taken on the basis no approvals were given to the construction. Pix by N.Lohathayalan
