Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts will launch the ‘The Gathering of Giants,’ from August 9 to 11, at the Cinnamon Habarana Complex with the aim of transforming the annual gathering of Asian elephants into a celebrated and educational experience for attendees.
Every year, the Minneriya National Park becomes the site of a spectacular natural event known as the ‘Elephant Gathering,’ where more than 300 elephants congregate around the Minneriya tank during the dry season. This phenomenon, recognized as the highest concentration of Asian elephants in a single location, occurs as the elephants migrate in search of diminishing water and food resources.
The Gathering of Giants’ event, hosted by Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts in collaboration with Cinnamon Nature Trails and Seylan Bank, aims to treasure, conserve, and celebrate this natural wonder. The event emphasizes the importance of peaceful human-elephant coexistence and effective conflict management. It reflects Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts’ commitment to conservation and sustainability.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Operating Officer of Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts, Hishan Singhawansha, highlighted the significance of this event, stating, “The Gathering of Giants truly symbolizes our commitment to conservation and sustainability. At Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts, we believe in the power of education and awareness to drive positive change.”
The annual gathering of elephants, which takes place from July to October, provides a unique opportunity to observe these majestic animals as they socialize, bathe, drink, feed, and potentially find mates. This natural spectacle has been recognized by Lonely Planet, BBC, and CNN, enhancing Sri Lanka’s reputation as a premier wildlife destination.
Area Vice President of Sri Lanka Resorts & General Manager of Cinnamon Bentota Beach, Johan Aschan, emphasized the event's impact, stating, “The Gathering of Giants significantly enhances the appeal of the Cinnamon Habarana Complex as a key player in sustainable tourism.”
The event will feature local and international guest speakers, including renowned wildlife conservationist and author Valmik Thapar from India, who has dedicated over 48 years to wildlife and tiger conservation. Other leading experts include Dr. Prithiviraj Fernando, Dr. Sumith Pilapitiya, and Dr. Rohan Pethiyagoda. These experts will provide valuable insights into the importance of conserving the elephant gathering and its significance to Sri Lanka.
Through strategic initiatives and educational efforts, Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts, together with Cinnamon Nature Trails, aims to safeguard and celebrate the elephant gathering, ensuring it remains a cherished natural wonder for future generations.
