An Army Sergeant and two soldiers attached to the Kuda Oya Special Forces Camp were among four suspects taken into custody for poaching inside a forest reserve in Lunugamvehera.
Wildlife officers found 58 kilograms of venison and 2.5 kilograms of dried venison from the possession of the suspects.
Wildlife officers raided the location yesterday (12) following a tip-off. Along with the venison, they also seized a knife, a scale used to weigh the meat, a motorbike, a three-wheeler and an army jeep.
The army sergeant and two soldiers, along with a civilian were arrested at the location while seven others allegedly involved in the racket had managed to escape.
The arrested suspects were produced before the Wellawaya Magistrate's Court yesterday where they were ordered to be released on two personal bonds of Rs 200, 000 each. The magistrate also ordered that the seized venison be destroyed. The case will be taken up again on February 11.
