Police in Kilinochchi have arrested three suspects in connection with an alleged attack on a car carrying three Catholic Priests who were returning from a Christmas related event.
The incident had occurred at about 10.00pm last night in Dharmapuram when a group of youth had allegedly stopped a car carrying the three Catholic Priests who were returning after attending a Christmas event.
Police said an exchange of words had occurred between the youths and the priests in the car, resulting in the youths attacking the car. Though the car was damaged in the attack, the occupants inside had escaped unhurt.
The priests then lodged a complaint with the Dharmapuram Police, who commenced investigations into the incident.
Based on their inquiries, police arrested three suspects who were allegedly involved in the attack this morning (28).
Police however, suspect that the exchange of words between the youths and the priests had developed due to a dispute over money, and this had escalated into the former attacking the car. As such, police said they do not believe that the attack was religiously motivated and aimed specifically at Catholic Priests.
Several others wanted in connection with the attack remain at large and Dharmapuram Police are conducting investigations to arrest them.
