Over a thousand individuals were hospitalized due to dengue in Jaffna this month (December) alone, the Director of Jaffna Teaching Hospital T. Sathiyamoorthy said. Three deaths related to dengue have also been reported from the district so far.
Due to the ongoing Monsoon rains in the region, every day at least 50 patients are admitted to hospital, the Hospital Director said. Among the victims include a young woman and an eleven-month-old baby who died due to severe fever recently.
Meanwhile, the total number of dengue cases this year increased to 85636 compared to 76689 last year. Colombo and Gampaha districts recorded a sharp increase this month alone. The total death toll due to dengue is 50, according to official data released by the National Dengue Control Unit. (N. Thayalan)
