The Monaragala police told the Sunday Times that that they received a tip off yesterday, where a group of people are engaging in a sale of elephant pearls (Gaja Muthu) at the Monaragala town.
The police said that when they deployed officers they were able to arrest three men and a woman possessing four elephant pearls. The police said that the three male suspects were identified 35, 47 and 66 while the woman was identified to be 45 years of age. They were residents of Bibila, Uswewa and Angunukolapalassa area.
Though elephant pearls are not real pearls, yet they are rarely occurring in the sockets of the tusks. Most pearls are poached by killing elephants. According to the Fauna and Flora Protection ordinance elephants are protected animals and therefore killing or illegally possessing elephants are offences punishable by law.
