Trade Minister Bandula Gunawardana today urged the public not to be misled by rumours of a salt shortage in the country following the pollution caused by the X-Press Pearl fire.
Consumers have rushed to purchase stocks of salt already on the market in the past few days over fears that chemicals that have leaked from the X-Press Pearl have mixed with salt.
Fronting a media conference along with salt producers today, Minister Gunawardana insisted there was no truth to rumours circulating in the country that there was a salt shortage.
He added that in order to allay the public's fears, prices of salt on the market will also be reduced significantly.
