A wild elephant was killed last night following a collision with Jaffna bound Yal Devi train plying to Colombo from Kakesanthurai, between Thirumurugandy and in Kilinochchi railway stations, Police said.
Local police officials said that the presence of wild elephants in the region was observed by locals and relevant authorities are informed to prevent such deaths in future.
According to the Department of Wildlife Conservation, there has been an increase in wild elephant deaths in 2023 with 114 elephants dying from January to April this year. (Pix by N.Lohathayalan)
