The training period for 60,000 graduates who were enrolled in the public service is to be extended by six months, officials said.
Accordingly Cabinet approval is to be sought to implement the decision.
Approval will be sought to recognise the vacancies in ministries and departments and implement the programme of assigning the recruits to the relevant institution.
Government plans to assign 18,000 of these trainees for teaching.
The training period was officially due to end this month.
The trainees are currently paid a Rs 20,000 allowance.
