Two Iranians fleeing to Sweden arrested at Katunayake

 Two Iranians who were attempting to escape to Sweden through Sri Lanka were arrested by Immigration Department officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport today (December 17). 

Due to the current political instabilities in Iran, a 41 year old singer and a 50 year old photographer had paid 10,000 euros each to a Turkish broker to create fake Norwegian passports with fake UAE immigration stamps. 

Having decided to flee to Stockholm, the Swedish capital, they had arrived in Sri Lanka today morning on the flight Al-Jazeera J-9552, expecting to stay in Sri Lanka for two days before boarding the flight to Sweden. 

However, the Immigration Department officials at the Katunayake Airport had identified the passports as fake and referred them to the Katunayake Airport Border Control, where they were confirmed as fake. 

After arresting the suspects, the officials had inspected their travel bags, where they discovered their real Iranian passports. 

Subsequently, steps were taken to send them back to Iran, in the same flight they had arrived on at 5:28 AM. 

The arrest and their expulsion was done by the officials, M. M. S. N. Gunasekara and M. A. Hettiarachchi, under the guidance of the Chief Immigration Officer, R. R. G. B. Ranasinghe.
