Two individuals have been killed and twelve others rescued when their ferry capsized at the Jaffna sea after leaving from Kurunagar jetty. The passengers were on their way to take part in the annual feast of St Anthony's shrine in Palaitheevu.
Two persons are reportedly missing, and moves are underway to track them by both fishermen and locals.
Though the total number of persons who travelled on the ferry remains unclear, so far, twelve persons have been rescued and admitted to Jaffna Teaching Hospital.
Meanwhile, Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Ramaligam Chandrasekar, has called for an immediate investigation into the boat accident reported in Jaffna, with the involvement of the Sri Lanka Navy and all relevant agencies, in order to determine the root causes of the incident.
