Two Buddhist monks who helped a criminal to escape from Police custody at the Bandaranaike International Airport have been arrested, Police said today.
The monks had visited the Airport on February 24 and helped the criminal wanted for a murder in the Hanwella area to escape from Police custody.
Earlier the Immigration Officers had found that the man was trying to leave the country on a forged passport and detained him. He was thereafter handed over to the BIA Police.
The two monks had visited the suspect in custody and got him out of the cell with the help of a policeman and helped him to escape.
The two monks also had escaped.
However Police, today morning tracked one of the monks and arrested him in the Hettipola area. He had led the Police to the religious centre in Rittadeniya where the second monk was arrested.
The driver of the car was also arrested and the vehicle was detained.
The main suspect wanted for the murder is from Bope, Poddala in Galle and is evading arrest.

A Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the No. 72 squadron has crashed into the Madhuru Oya reservoir this morning, Air FOrce Media Spokesman Eranda Geeganage said.
Update: Five of the twelve passengers on board the bell 212 aircraft that crashed into the Maduru Oya today, have succumbed to their injuries, the SLAF said.
