Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara today announced that with the implementation of the electricity tariff increase effective from today the CEB will also provide uninterrupted power supplies.
Minister Wijesekara told a news conference that as a result of the revision they have been able to secure a Rs 50 billion loan from the Peoples’s Bank and another Rs 22 billion from the Bank of Ceylon. The funds will be used for the payment of coal imports and pay the CPC for outstanding fuel supply bills.
He said on the insturctions of the President low-electricity users will be provided relief after a scheme is worked out with the Finance Ministry in the next few months.
Mr Wijesekara said that the electricity tariff increase was part of the steps to obtain the IMF facility which is under negotiation currently.
