Hundred acres of forestry land of Weerakodicholai reserve in Puttlam had been destroyed by a fire yesterday, Saliyawewa police said.
They said that forestry and army officers managed to douse the fire within three hours after detecting the fire. Police said the area burnt by the fire is also a place where forest plantation of teak trees is carried out by the farming community.
The forestry officers attached to the area said that they believed that the fire erupted around 1.30 p.m. They also suspected that a cattle farmer who released cattle into the forest reserve might have set fire to the land.
The officer said that cattle farmers set fire to lands in forest reserves to promote new growth of grasses during rainy season, so they can release their cattle to the farmlands.
Further investigations are carried out by the Saliyawea police and forestry department.
