‘Wanniyalaththo’, the exceptional book was launched on Tuesday, August 20, at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, Colombo 07.
The biography of the leader of the indigenous, written by the well known Sri Lankan author Mr Gunasekara Gunasoma and published by the leading ‘Sarasavi Publisher’ in Sri Lanka.
The event was graced by distinguished guests and marked a significant moment in the Sri lankan literary and cultural landscape.
The event began with an introduction to the purpose of the book by Mr Mahinda Kumara Dalupotha, a lecturer, active environmentalist, and well-known author. He fluently presented the book, highlighting its importance in preserving the history and heritage of Sri Lanka’s indigenous leaders.
Following the introduction, the first copy of 'Wanniyalaththo' was ceremoniously presented to General Shavendra Silva, the Chief of Defence of Sri Lanka by the leader of the indigenous, Wanniyalaththo.
The event featured an engaging speech by Professor Raj Somadeva of the Postgraduate Institute of Archaeology, University of Kelaniya, adding academic insight into the book’s historical context. Mr S C Weerasekara, the Group Director and the Chief Executive Officer of the Capital Maharaja Group, Sri Lanka, also addressed the gathering, linking the book launch to S-LON's ‘Thurukapakaru’ program.
As a symbolic gesture, Mr. Weerasekara presented a plant to the Wannilaaththo the leader of the indigenous community, representing the program's commitment to environmental Sustainability. Ms Harshi Abeynayaka, the Coordinator of the High Commission of Canada in Sri Lanka, also represented this historic event held yesterday, August 19, 2024.
The ceremony was rich with cultural and indigenous elements, beginning with a blessing by Adiwasi (indigenous) rituals. The atmosphere was further refreshed by performances, including traditional songs and dances by Adiwasi children from Hennanigala, and a tribute song to the leader Wanniyalaththo performed by an indigenous woman in collaboration with professional singer Nadeeka Guruge. The event concluded with the 'Krirkoraha' dance, a religious and cultural performance that added a sacred dimension to the celebration.
Marking this as a unique milestone in bringing the stories of Sri Lankan indigenous leaders to the forefront of national consciousness, Mr Gunasekara Gunasoma, the respected author of the book 'Wanniyalathto', expressed his heartfelt gratitude to all those who participated in the launch.
