A wild elephant suspected to be killed due to electrocution was found in Ganeshpuram area in Vavuniya yesterday, local wildlife officials said.
The wildlife officers of Vavuniya wildlife range office told the Times online that an eight foot tall elephant was found lying dead in private property in Ganeshpuram area today.
The officers said that the wild elephant had entered the property during the previous night has triggered an electric wire which had been laid on the ground.
The Vavuniya wildlife range officers said that a villager notified them when the incident occurred. They said when they reached the area the wire used to electrocute the elephant was removed by the suspects.
However the wildlife officers and Vavuniya police had arrested 45 year old woman who owned the property where the elephant was found dead. The woman is to be produced before Vavuniya Magistrate courts.
