Adverse weather destroys 500 houses, damages 4000

Some 500 houses have been completely destroyed and 4000 others partially damaged due to last month's floods and landslides, the Government said today. 

Accordingly, Cabinet has assigned Minister of Disaster Management Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and Minister of Housing and Construction Sajith Premadasa to plan a suitable program to reconstruct destroyed houses and to renovate partially damaged houses and to submit the program to the Cabinet. 

Meanwhile, 639 tanks, canals and anicuts have also been destroyed due to last month's adverse weather. Many cultivated lands including paddy and additional crops have also been destroyed in the Gampaha, Colombo, Kaluthara, Matale, Anuradhapura, Kandy, Kurunegala, Ratnapura, Monaragala, Batticaloa, Kegalle, Puttalam, NuwaraEliya, Vavuniya, Kilinochchi, Mullativu, Jaffna and Mannar Districts. 

Accordingly, a proposal made Minister of Agriculture Duminda Dissanayake to implement an accelerated programme to rehabilitate the above tanks, canals and anicuts, to safeguard the food safety in the country, has also been approved by Cabinet.
