Attorney General (AG) Dappula de Livera has filed a case against two suspects over the murder of the Delft Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman D Rexian Kamalendran at the Jaffna High Court today (Jun 18).
AG Livera had moved High Court without calling for the inquiry of witness statements by considering the incident to be a high-profile murder.
Charges had been levelled against the suspects for plotting and murdering the former Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman between November 25 - 26 in Pungudutivu, Jaffna.
Former Northern Provincial Council (NPC) Opposition Leader Kandasami Kamalendran alias 'Kamal' and the wife of the victim Rexian Anitha have been named as the suspects in the case.
Yasinthan alias 'Jessi' has been named as the chief witness for the prosecution. He had been in remand custody when a case had been initially filed over this murder.
However, Yasinthan had divulged details pertaining to the incident before a Magistrate's Court following which the AG had decided to grant him a conditional pardon.
Investigations have revealed that the wife of the victim had a longstanding dispute since with her husband she had maintained a clandestine affair with 'Kamal' - the other accused in the case.
