The Attorney General (AG) has sought a fuller Supreme Court bench to hear the petitions filed against the Police Chief and the former Defence Secretary over the Easter Sunday attacks.
The AG has filed a motion seeking a fuller judge bench comprising five or more members in line with the constitution since the petitions were of national importance, Additional Solicitor General Farzana Jameel told the Supreme Court today (May 31).
Accordingly, a three-member judge bench headed by Justice Sisira de Abrew ordered that court sittings be moved until June 06 to decide further matters on the case.
Previously, the AG had informed court that he would not be appearing on behalf of the respondents being the IGP and the former Defence Secretary. As such during today's hearing personal lawyers appeared on behalf of the IGP and the former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando.
The petitioners had sought a Supreme Court order directing the AG to take legal action against the respondents claiming that they had failed to act to prevent the Easter Sunday carnage which left 359 people dead and 500 injured, despite having received prior information.
