The Attorney General (AG) has decided to appeal against a decision taken by the Colombo Chief Magistrate's court to release IGP Pujith Jayasundara and former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando on bail.
The appeal had been filed at the High Court seeking to overturn this court order, an official at the AG's Department said.
Jayasundara and Fernando were arrested after the AG had instructed the Acting IGP to name the said officials as suspects for failing to prevent the terrorist attacks, and produce them before court.
These instructions had been issued in keeping with the recommendations of the Special Investigation Committee which was appointed by the President to probe into the Easter Sunday bombings.
However, Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne had released the accused on bail by declaring that sufficient evidence had not been submitted yet to substantiate the murder charges filed against the suspects.
