An employee at the Bandaranaike International Airport has been arrested while attempting to smuggle out jewellery worth more than Rs 10 million from the premises of the airport today (June 01).
The suspect has been identified as a 55-year old woman residing in Katunayake, Customs Additional Director General Sunil Jayaratne said. He added that an airport passenger had handed over the jewellery to the employee before leaving the country.
Mr. Jayaratne further explained that the suspect who was employed as a janitor, had attempted to smuggle the jewellery outside the airport by concealing it within a polythene bag.
Around two kilograms of jewellery had been seized from the suspect. Customs officials suspect that the female janitor had been engaged in this illegal trade for a long time.
