Alliance Air, a subsidiary of Air India will commence flights between Chennai and Jaffna from November 11, beginning its first international flight service.
Issuing a statement the airline said that it will introduce direct flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, between the two cities.
Accordingly, Flight 9I - 102 will depart from Jaffna at 12:45 pm and arrive in Chennai at 2:10 pm. Flight 9I - 101 will leave Chennai at 10:35 am and reach Jaffna by 12 pm.
The Jaffna International Airport, which was declared open last month, will be the 54th airport and the first international destination for the airline, its statement read.
"It brings us immense pleasure that after spearheading efforts connecting unique regional routes within India under UDAN, we now fly international, adding the beautiful island nation Sri Lanka in the aviation ambit of Alliance Air," Alliance Air's CEO Shri C.S.Subbiah was quoted as saying in the statement.
Airfares for journeys from Jaffna to Chennai will cost around USD 98 (Rs 17,000 at present conversion rates), inclusive of taxes. The cost of travelling from Chennai to Jaffna will cost 3990 INR (Rs 10,156 at present conversion rates), in addition to taxes.
Sri Lankan passengers will also have the option of flying to places such as Trichy, Madurai, Delhi, Trivandrum, Goa, Hyderabad, Kuwait, Muscat, Dubai, Sharjah over Chennai, Alliance Air's statement noted.
