UPFA General Secretary Mahinda Amaraweera today (Jan 03) filed an intervening petition in the case involving the writ petition filed against the mental health of the President.
Accordingly, Mr. Amaraweera requested the Appeal Court to dismiss the petition that was filed against the President during the first hearing thereby preventing the case to proceed further.
Earlier, a petition was filed at the Colombo District Court calling for a writ of mandamus to be issued on IGP Pujith Jayasundara and the OIC of the Colombo Fort Police in order to investigate into the matter.
However, Mr. Amaraweera in his petition had claimed that the Appellate court could not proceed with the case as per Articles 35 and 140 of the constitution. He also said the petition filed against the President was done with the motive of tarnishing his image.
The petition against President Sirisena was filed by Thakshila Lakmali, a resident of Colombo 12, following a series of remarks that created suspicion on the President’s mental health condition.
She pointed out that the President had stated that he would not appoint Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Prime Minister even if 225 MPs signed on his behalf.
