Apeksha Hospital gets long-awaited PET Scanner

News

The PET Scanner that was purchased with funds from the public has now been set up at the Apeksha Hospital in Maharagama and will be ready for services from April 1, Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne stated, according to a media release by the Ministry of Health.

The scanner was flown into Sri Lanka on December 24 and will formally come into operation at a ceremony held at the hospital.

The scanner was purchased with the intervention of M.S.H. Mohammed and his Kadijah Foundation and all media institutions. The scanner was purchased using funds contributed by members of the public which were later handed over to the Health Ministry. Upon completion of the tender process and Cabinet approval, the scanner was purchased from "Siemens" in Germany.

Purchased at a cost of Rs.202 million, the advanced scanner is capable of conducting more than 100 scans a month and it will considerably improve treatment services for cancer patients at the hospital, the Health Ministry said.

Engineers from Siemens have already established the scanner and are in the process of testing it now, the Ministry added.
